Monkey, intelligent and dynamic
This statue of the monkey riding the elephant, represents the taming of the mind. According to Buddhism, this elephant represents the mind of the meditator. The wild or untrained elephant can be dangerous and inflict great harm, but once trained it will obey and do hard work. This can be said of one’s mind also. The elephant has very big footprints; symbolising our mental defilements. A state of calm, is the result of working to improve ones mind. The monkey leading the elephant represents distraction. It is difficult for a monkey to keep quiet for any length of time, it is always chattering and is easily distracted. Just as the monkey leads the elephant, our attention is easily distracted. The elephant and monkey are depicted as being grey and brown in the beginning of their journey of Calm Abiding. At the end of their journey they are white, which symbolises they have tamed their wild minds, which are now under control. In Vedic tradition, the monkey is called Hanuman and represents selfless devotion. The elephant is called Ganesha and is known as the Remover of Obstacles and Lord of Beginnings.
